World Environment Day Seminar 2026 Highlights Renewable Energy and Climate Resilience in Somalia
As part of the global celebration of World Environment Day 2026, the READ Project successfully organized a seminar titled “Renewable Energy in Somalia for Sustainable Development and a Climate Resilient Future” in Mogadishu, Somalia. The event brought together students, academics, government representatives, youth organizations, renewable energy stakeholders, and development practitioners to discuss the role of renewable energy in advancing sustainable development and strengthening climate resilience.World Environment Day Seminar 2026 Highlights Renewable Energy and Climate Resilience in Somalia




The seminar provided an important platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and awareness raising on renewable energy opportunities in Somalia and their contribution to environmental sustainability, economic development, and climate action. Discussions focused on the importance of renewable energy in addressing environmental challenges while supporting inclusive growth and a more resilient future.
The event commenced with welcoming and opening remarks by Dr. Abdalla A. Ali, Project Manager at Capital University of Somalia, who highlighted the significance of World Environment Day and emphasized the role of the READ Project in promoting renewable energy education, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience across Sub Saharan Africa.


An overview of World Environment Day and the READ Project was presented by Stuma Makocha, who emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and highlighted the contribution of the READ Project in strengthening green skills, institutional capacity, renewable energy education, and public awareness.




The seminar also featured remarks from Farhia Dini of the SIMAD University READ Project Team, who highlighted the importance of renewable energy education, research, and capacity building in supporting sustainable development and climate resilience. She reaffirmed the commitment of partner institutions to strengthening collaboration and advancing the objectives of the READ Project.




A special session was delivered by Ahmed Yusuf Ahmed, Director of the Somali Climate Action Platform, on “Climate Action and Renewable Energy for a Resilient Somalia.” He emphasized the urgent need for climate action and highlighted the role of renewable energy in supporting environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and long-term development in Somalia.
The keynote presentation was delivered by Najib Ahmed, Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Water and Energy, Federal Government of Somalia, on the theme “Renewable Energy in Somalia for Sustainable Development and a Climate Resilient Future.” His presentation highlighted the vast renewable energy potential of Somalia, particularly solar and wind energy resources, and discussed the importance of investing in green skills, innovation, and sustainable energy solutions. He further emphasized the contribution of renewable energy to economic growth, environmental protection, energy access, and climate resilience.
The seminar generated meaningful discussions among participants on renewable energy opportunities, sustainability, climate resilience, and the role of academia, government institutions, civil society, and development partners in supporting Somalia’s energy transition. Participants exchanged ideas on how renewable energy can contribute to environmental protection, economic development, and climate adaptation while creating opportunities for future generations.





The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Ahmed Ga’ali Ali, Rector of Capital University of Somalia, who thanked the speakers, participants, partner institutions, and organizers for their valuable contributions to the success of the seminar. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among academia, government institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners in advancing renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. He further encouraged participants to apply the knowledge and insights gained from the seminar to support Somalia’s transition toward a more sustainable and climate resilient future.
Through this seminar, the READ Project reinforced its commitment to promoting renewable energy education, strengthening institutional capacity, developing green skills, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to support sustainable development and a climate resilient future across Sub Saharan Africa.
The READ Project will continue to implement dissemination, capacity-building, and awareness activities that contribute to the advancement of renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and sustainable development across partner countries and institutions.
